EU Directives 2002/98/EC, 2005/61/EC and 2005/62/EC apply to the collection and testing of blood and blood components, whatever their intended purpose. The Directives also apply to the processing, storage and distribution of blood and blood components, but only when they are intended to be used for transfusion. A National Steering Committee was established to examine the implications of the Directives and to evaluate progress on compliance with Council and Commission Directives.
