Interdepartmental Policy Steering Group on Medical Education and Training
Terms of Reference
- The Steering Group will comprise representatives of the Departments of Education and Science, Health and Children, and Finance, the Higher Education Authority, and the Health Service Executive, and will report to the Ministers for Education and Science and Health and Children.
- The Steering Group will be responsible for the ongoing development of strategy and policy on undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training in accordance with Government policy.
- The Steering Group will establish and steer the work of a National Committee on Medical Education and Training whose remit will be to oversee and contribute to the integrated implementation of Government policy on medical education and training.
- In addressing its remit, the Steering Group will have regard to the implications of strategy and policy on medical education and training for other sectors, including the health and education systems and the wider island economy.
- The Steering Group will consult with such stakeholders that it deems appropriate to its Terms of Reference.
- The Steering Group will carry out such other functions as may be assigned to it by the Ministers for Education and Science and Health and Children.
- The Steering Group will remain in place until such time that the Ministers decide to discontinue it, given that the recommendations in the Fottrell and Buttimer Reports (individually and combined) form a multi-annual programme requiring implementation of a sequence of initiatives over a period of years.
