Health Strategy 2001

Background

The new Strategy is intended to build on the current Health Strategy, Shaping a Healthier Future, which was published in 1994 as a strategy for effective health care in the 1990s. Its main theme was the orientation or reshaping of our health services so that improving people's health and quality of life became the primary and unifying focus of the work of health care policy makers and providers. It was underpinned by three principles; equity, quality of services and accountability.

It is clear that a fresh look needs to be taken at fundamental aspects of the health system to build on the progress made over the last seven years. It will also be necessary to outline the direction and scale of development planned in a number of service and professional areas e.g. bed capacity review, primary health care, medical manpower, nursing etc.
