Implementation of Report of National Task Force on Medical Staffing

Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Health and Children has today (27 February, 2004) announced details of the groups to oversee implementation of the Hanly Report’s recommendations for developing acute hospital services in the East Coast and Mid Western Health Board regions.
The groups will assess the detailed staffing and capital requirements necessary for implementation of the report. A doubling in the number of consultants is recommended in both regions - from 178 to 307 posts in the East Coast area and from 109 to 304 consultants in the Mid Western region. The implementation will lead to an increase in the range of specialties in both regions and will also mean an expansion of both the primary care and ambulances services.
In both cases, the implementation groups will be supported as required by a number of sub groups to deal with detailed individual aspects of their work. The Groups are representative of all the stakeholders in the region, including representatives of the public interest
The Minister said that he wanted to ensure that the Hanly recommendations were implemented in a way that takes full account of the views expressed by the people in both regions. The Minister has asked both implementation groups, and the Acute Hospitals Review Group which he announced last month, to take account of the public debate that has taken place on the proposals so far. This includes ensuring that medical cover will continue to be provided overnight in each acute hospital.
