Minister O´Malley addresses the Post Natal Depression seminar

Mr. Tim O´Malley T.D., Minister for State at the Department of Health and Children today (Thursday 7th November, 2002) addressed the seminar on Postnatal Depression hosted by the Women’s Health Unit of the Northern Area Health Board (NAHB) in Dublin.

Postnatal depression is a condition which includes a range of physical and emotional changes which many mothers experience after having a baby. Post Partum Depression can be treated with medication, counselling and group support.

"An occasion such as this is testament to the importance my Department and the Northern Area Health Board place on recognising postnatal depression and on the importance of providing appropriate support mechanisms for women who experience depression following the birth of their child" the Minister said.

The Minister paid tribute to attendees from both the statutory and voluntary sectors. He outlined the important work undertaken by both groups in providing support for those suffering from Postnatal Depression. He also acknowledged the crucial role they perform in promoting awareness of the condition.

In his address, the Minister referred to the fact that more than one in ten mothers experience some form of postnatal depression, yet many suffer in silence. He thanked all involved in the organisation of this conference and wished them continued success in their work.
