Minister O´Malley Opens Newly Refurbished office for the Samaritans
5 November 2002
Mr. Tim O´Malley T.D., Minister for State at the Department of Health and Children today (Tuesday 5th November, 2002) opened the newly refurbished office for the Samaritans in Dublin.
The Minister noted that the Samaritans are available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. "This event gives us all a welcome opportunity to view this facility and to compliment those responsible, both the voluntary and statutory organisations, for their hard work in bringing this project to fruition" the Minister said.
In his address, the Minister referred to the fact that the volunteers are men and women of all age groups and from all walks of life. They give their time and energy to befriend those who are anxious, depressed or suicidal. "By giving people time to talk, rather than giving advice, and by showing concern and empathy, they are of great help to those in need" the Minister added.
The Minister referred to the improvements to the visitor rooms which will afford more privacy to people who chose to call into the centre. Callers with disabilities will be facilitated by the new wheelchair accessible features, including a new lift.
The Minister thanked the Samaritans for their work in befriending callers and wished them continued success.
