Minister approves £45 million hospital development for Longford/Westmeath
Number of beds to increase to 296

Mr Micheál Martin, Minister for Health and Children, today (19 July 2001) announced approval for Phase 2 B of Longford/Westmeath General Hospital. It is expected that this development will cost approximately £45million at current prices and will increase the number of beds from 198 to 296.
"This represents a major boost for the Midland region, the hospital and the services it provides," said the Minister
"It will be of immense benefit to patients who will have access to a greatly enhanced level of service. The investment demonstrates this Government's commitment to the enhancement of acute hospital services."
The development of Phase 2 B will include the following departments:
- Pathology
- Theatres
- General Medicine
- General Surgery
- Day Surgery
- Administration Services
- Isolation facilities
- Staff Changing Rooms
- Staff Rest Rooms
- Acute Psychiatric Unit
- Rehabilitation Unit
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Occupational Therapy
- Catering Department
- Day Services (other than Surgical)
- I.C.U./C.C.U.
- Concourse
- Conference
- Staff on-call accommodation
The funds for this project is allocated under the National Development Plan and will be additional to that already provided to the Midland Health Board under the Plan.
