Response to UK study on the effects of anti-virals to children
We note the results of this review which was done in the context of seasonal flu rather than the current pandemic flu, therefore caution is needed in applying the findings to the current situation. The antiviral guidance in Ireland follows the advice of the National Pandemic Influenza Expert Group and is based on a careful balancing of the risks and benefits of antiviral therapy. The policy in Ireland differs from that in the UK in that anti-viral medication is not prescribed in the majority of cases. Anti-viral therapy is only routinely recommended in Ireland for those with severe illness or for those who are in defined high-risk groups and in all cases will be based on clinical judgement. The vast majority of patients will have a mild self-limiting illness which can be managed at home with usual over the counter medicines and anti-viral treatment is not required in such cases.
