Communication and Consultation Plan

The Commission is currently engaging in an extensive process of communication and consultation with a variety of key stakeholders to provide an open forum for debate and discussion on the type of flexibilities and change which would be necessary to achieve a 35 hour week for nurses and midwives. The outcome of these consultations will have a significant bearing on the Commission’s final recommendations

Phase 1 of the process comprised a series of consultation workshops around the country from 26th May to 27th June. As part of the sessions participants watched a video presentation by Professor Phillip Della on reform initiatives undertaken in Australia. The slides from these presentation are available here

Participants were than asked to consider the following three questions:

(a) What changes / innovations would you suggest, to the role and scope of nurses and midwives in order to achieve a 35 hour week?
(b) What changes would you suggest could be made to the structure and organisation of your workplace in order to support the delivery of a 35 hour week?
(c) What system-wide changes would you propose to improve service delivery and optimise patient care?

Phase 1 of the consultation process is now complete. Eight consultation workshops have been held around the country – in Dublin, Tullamore, Galway, Kilkenny, Carrickmacross, Bundoran, Cork and Limerick.

Phase 2 of the consultative process will commence in early October and will involve a series of consultative meetings with organisations and groups representing key stakeholders to outline what the issues/ responsibilities/ interests are for their particular sector in achieving a 35 hour week. The Commission will be writing to the relevant organisations over the coming weeks to arrange these meetings.
