Probable case of variant CJD

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney T.D, has been informed of another probable case of variant CJD (awaiting confirmation) in a Dublin hospital.

She has been assured that every possible safeguard and preventative measure had been taken by the relevant agencies, the hospital management and the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. She has been in contact with the chairman of the CJD Advisory Group.

The Tánaiste will continue to be updated on developments.

Out of respect for the patient and the patient's family, and the confidentiality of the doctor patient relationship, the Department is appealing to the press not to identify the hospital and to respect the privacy of the family at this very difficult time.
