North South Ministerial Council

The North South Ministerial Council (NSMC) www.northsouthministerialcouncil.org was established under the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement (1998), to develop consultation, co-operation and action within the island of Ireland - including through implementation on an all-island and cross-border basis - on matters of mutual interest and within the competence of the Administrations, North and South.

The North South Ministerial Council meets in Sectoral Format to oversee co-operation in the agreed 12 Areas or Sectors.

In relation to health the NSMC meets in Health Sectoral format in order to make decisions on common policies and approaches e.g. cancer research and health promotion. Other joint Departmental initiatives include collaboration in other areas such as Suicide prevention, Pandemic Flu Planning, Child Protection and GP Out of Hours Services.
