Health Strategy Implementation Projects
During 2002 and 2003 the Department of Health and Children identified patient and client focused initiatives as priority items for action. Teams of people drawn from across the health service came together under the auspices of the Health Boards Executive to develop national guidelines to support the consistent implementation of key actions. These Actions, listed below, specifically treat of the user’s experience of, and involvement in, the health service. They reflect the commitment to one of the 4 guiding principles of the strategy, people-centredness.
- Action 48: A national standardised approach to measurement of patient satisfaction will be introduced - Measurement of Patient Satisfaction - Guidelines
- Action 49: Best practice models of customer care including a statutory system of complaint handling will be introduced - Complaints and Suggestions - Guidelines
- Action 52: Provision will be made for the participation of the community in decisions about the delivery of health and personal socials services. Community Participation - Guidelines - Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.
- Action 84: The organisation and management of services will be enhanced to the greatest benefit of patients and
- Action 86: A substantial programme of improvements in accident and emergency departments will be introduced - Admission and Discharge - Guidelines

National Health Strategy Consultative Forum 2001
A National Health Strategy Consultative Forum, representative of key stakeholders in the health services, including health professionals, management and consumers and chaired by Dr Danny O'Hare, was established to provide advice to the Steering Group during the development of the National Health Strategy.
