Functions:
  • Evaluate the performance of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service and the HSE in achieving and maintaining international standards in transfusion medicine and in achieving compliance with EU Council and Commission Directives on the Quality and Safety of Blood (2002/98/EC, 2005/61/EC and 2005/62/EC) and Safety and Quality of Tissues and Cells (2004/23/EC, 2006/17/EC and 2006/86/EC).
  • Evaluate the delivery of health and personal support services to meet the current and future needs of persons infected by HIV/Hepatitis C through blood and blood products administered within the State.
  • Manage legal and administrative issues arising from infection by Hepatitis C and HIV through the administration within the State of blood and blood products and implement the recommendations of Inquiries into matters relating to infected blood and blood products.
  • Progress implementation of the recommendations of the Madden Report and Working Group Report on Post Mortem Practice and Procedures, and the preparation of proposals for Human Tissue and related matters.
  • Support the Minister's accountability to the Oireachtas.
