Minister for State with responsibility for Primary Care

Appointed Minister of State for Primary Care in the Department of Health, 10th March 2011.

Minister Shortall was assigned responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy in May 2011 and became chair of the National Aids Strategy Committee in November 2011.

The Minister’s principal responsibilities include the development of Primary Care, the roll-out of free G.P. care, and the National Drugs Strategy including the development of a national strategy to counter the over-consumption of alcohol in Ireland.

Minister Shortall was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1992 and re-elected at every election since. The Minister has held shadow Ministries in a wide number of areas, including Justice, Health, Education, Transport and Social Protection. In the last Dáil, Ms. Shortall was a member of the Committee of Public Accounts as well as a member of the Joint Committee on Social and Family Affairs.

Ms. Shortall was a member of Dublin City Council from 1991 to 2003 and Chairperson of the Eastern Health Board between 1996-98. Minister Shortall has also been a member of the Ballymun Local Drugs Task Force and the Finglas Local Drugs Task Force.

Before entering politics, Ms. Shortall was a teacher of the deaf.
