Responsibilities
Research
- Develop a strong research capability in the health sector.
- Leadership of Health Research Group established in May 2007 as a Subgroup of the Inter Departmental Committee, in accordance with the Strategy on Science, Technology and Innovation. (Please see Working Groups)
- The Health Research Board is under the aegis of this division and is funded mainly by the Department of Health and Children.
EU Affairs
- Complete negotiations on Draft EU directive on Patients Rights in Cross-Border Healthcare.
- Manage the Department’s responsibility under EU Scrutiny legislation in relation to Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Scrutiny. (please see section on main website page, ‘Recent publications’, for six-monthly reports).

International
- Manage Department’s responsibilities for the World Health Organisation World Health Assembly, Regional Committee and Executive Board meetings. Information on the structure and content of these meetings is available at http://who.int
- Organise official visits to Ireland by foreign health ministers and other foreign dignitaries.
North/South
- Manage the Department’s responsibilities under the Good Friday & St Andrews Agreements, the North South Ministerial Council arrangements for health sector co-operation and other commitments in relation to North South and East West relations.
- Manage the Department’s role as joint Implementing Agent (with DHSS&PS) for EU Structural Fund Programmes, Interreg 111a and Interreg IV, for cross border co-operation.
