The National Council on Ageing and Older People

The National Council on Ageing and Older People was established by the Minister for Health on the 19th March 1997. Its functions were:

  1. To advise the Minister for Health and Children on all aspects of ageing and the welfare of older people;
  2. To assist the development of national and regional policies and strategies designed to produce health gain and social gain for older people;
  3. To promote the health, welfare and autonomy of older people;
  4. To promote a better understanding of ageing and older people in Ireland;
  5. To liaise with international bodies with functions similar to the functions of the Council.

The Council was dissolved with effect from 1 September 2009 under the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009.
